Von Seidels enters a joint venture with Rouse for IP services in Africa
5 October 2015
We are excited to announce that Von Seidels is expanding in Africa through a joint venture with global IP firm Rouse. The new venture is called ‘Rouse Africa’ and officially launches today.
Rouse Africa is headquartered in Cape Town and focuses on Sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa, where Von Seidels continues to operate independently with no change to its name, services or structure. Our Africa fees have not increased, in fact our expansion into Africa enables us to reduce our fees.
We already have a Namibian Attorney and ARIPO Representative, and an office in Namibia to file patent and trademark applications directly with ARIPO. Rouse Africa is working towards opening local offices in Cameroon, Nigeria, Kenya and other key African countries.
Our confidence in the growth potential of Africa and our promise to provide clients with efficient and cost effective services across the African continent are key drivers of this partnership.
Bastiaan Koster from Von Seidels and Maura Canavan from Rouse are both Directors of Rouse Africa and will jointly head up the company. Other key personnel include Von Seidels’ Head of Trademarks, Christine Strutt and African Trademark Manager, Claire Brown, as well as Namibian/ARIPO Attorney Gunther Roland, who specialises in patents.
According to Bastiaan Koster, “The joint venture will strengthen our position as one of Africa’s leading IP law firms. Not only will this be a boost to our business, but the combination of Rouse’s global scale and Von Seidels’ local knowledge will help us expand further and faster into Africa. From our vantage point in Cape Town, we know there are substantial opportunities for IP practitioners across the continent. Like us, Rouse prides itself on being responsive to client needs and shares our commitment to practical, high quality service. Von Seidels’ structure and services in South Africa will not change – what is changing is our ability to widen our horizons, while retaining our own reputation for excellence.”
Matters relating to African countries outside of South Africa will continue and be handled by the same team, but under the new brand:
