The enforcement and customs landscape in Africa have encountered a significant change, specifically in Tanzania. From 1 December 2025, all goods entering mainland Tanzania must have their trade marks recorded with the Fair Competition Commission (FCC). Goods bearing unrecorded trade marks, whether genuine or counterfeit, will be susceptible to being detained at the border and might lead incurring further penalties and fines.

This initiative aims to strengthening border control and to better equip customs officials to intercept counterfeit goods at the point of entry. The system operates in parallel to the activities of the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA – The Industrial Property Office).

Our team can help with complying with this new mandatory recordal requirement to ensure the smooth import of goods into Tanzania and strengthen enforcement measures.
