A candidate patent attorney with a background in medicinal chemistry
Courtney Waters is a candidate attorney in the patent department. Her work focuses on supporting patentability investigations, freedom-to-operate analyses, and the preparation and filing of patent applications. She has a particular interest in pharmaceutical and chemistry-related innovations.
Courtney completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Medicinal Chemistry at Stellenbosch University, with focal areas in chemistry and physiology. She went on to complete an Honours degree in Chemistry (cum laude). Her honours research dissertation centred on computational drug design, using quantum chemical theory to model gold-based anticancer drugs and their interactions with biological molecular targets.
Her interest in intellectual property was sparked during an elective IP module in her final undergraduate year, where she became motivated to protect and advance the innovations developed by scientists and researchers. Courtney is currently studying towards a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) through the University of South Africa.
