Radio DJ Kieno Kammies from Cape Talk on Copyright and IP Protection.

Radio talk show host DJ Kieno Kammies interviewed Christine Strutt, head of our trademarks department, on two separate legal issues.

During the first half of the show Keino welcomes guest speaker and Head of Communications at the Competition Commission, Mr Sipho Ngwema, to discuss the formal complaints received regarding the high cost of school uniforms and where parents can buy them from.

The question is raised whether school emblems on uniforms are subject to copyright and whether a third party NGO could sell “knock-off” school uniforms to poorer schools as a way of bringing the cost of uniforms down. Christine shares insight to the rights that the schools have as far as uniforms are concerned.

In the second half of the show, Christine joins a talk with Mr Jaco Kruger from Chrome Cherry, a local product and industrial design company, as they discuss the importance of protecting your brand and/or product and the challenges that could arise during the process of gaining IP protection.
